Holy Daily Bread
by Brenda D. Flowers
In this manner, therefore, pray:
Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come.
Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread… (Matthew 6: 9-11, NKJV)
On July 12, 2025, my husband, three grandsons and I attended a beautiful wedding of a precious couple from our church. I was touched deeply during their service when three men, the groom’s cousin and two close friends of the couple, sang “The Lord’s Prayer.”
As I listened and prayed, I thought about how special it was that this couple chose to have these words of Jesus sung at their wedding. Throughout their service, it was clear they wanted to give God holy reverence and honor for His bringing them together to become husband and wife.
Hearing the song, I also was reminded that forty-seven years ago on June 17th, 1978, “The Lord’s Prayer” was sung at my wedding .
In looking back over my married life, I can see how God has been very good to my husband and me. I am grateful for how He has answered this prayer in our lives in many ways. Most of all, I can see how God used our marriage and life’s circumstances to mature us spiritually. We have grown stronger in our faith both individually and as a couple.
Early in my marriage, when I prayed or sang “The Lord’s Prayer”, I honestly didn’t recognize the depth of the words I recited.
My understanding of Jesus’s words was very shallow.
First of all, Jesus taught the importance of honoring God as holy, yet also recognizing Him as our Heavenly Father who desires a close relationship with us. I have grown in my understanding that God loves to spend time with me, His daughter. He cares for me and all my loved ones.
When I was younger, I didn’t realize the importance of being a part of God’s Kingdom as one of His representatives on earth. I have learned my words and actions matter in this dark world.
When I prayed for God to give me my daily bread, I often thought that those words meant it was my responsibility to read a simple Bible verse or devotional daily. Or I thought God wanted me to give Him my list of needs, requesting His help daily.
I confess there were times I wanted God’s provision, but wasn’t willing to spend time with Him in relationship. I’ve told God that I am sorry for my selfish ways. Thankfully, He has forgiven me.
God has been gracious in His provisions. He was patient with me and my husband as we sometimes tried to do life our own way rather than seeking His will first.
As years passed and as my husband and I went through life’s daily challenges together in this fallen world, we both realized much more the importance of receiving God’s daily bread. We have matured in our understanding of how important our times in prayer and meditation of God’s word are.
Receiving our daily bread is now a very holy treasured time.
Jesus truly is our daily bread.
Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”
“Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.”
Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” (John 6:32-35, NIV)
