Maturing In Christ

Maturing in Christ

Challenge:  Read His Words Aloud

by Brenda D. Flowers

Several weeks ago, I had several light bulbs go out at the same time. I thought it was rather strange but reasoned I had purchased them a long time ago and it was probably time for them to go out. After several minutes of searching for light bulbs to no avail, I made a special trip to the store. After over an hour, I returned and replaced the bulbs. When I turned on the switch, nothing happened. It was then when I finally realized the lights had not come on because the circuit connection had been broken and all I had to do was go down to the basement to move the switch of the circuit breaker to its correct position. Once that was done the electrical power was able to flow freely and the light bulbs all came on. My trip to the store had been a waste of time.

Not long after that experience, I was doing my morning Bible study.[1] The verse at the top of that day’s lesson was Revelation 1: 3 (NIV)

Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it, because the time is near.

After reading over the verse a couple of times silently, it was as if the word aloud was shining. Light bulbs lit up in my brain and in my heart. It was at that moment that I realized God wants me to read His words aloud, especially Revelation. He also wants me to read His word so they are heard by others. Why?

It occurred to me that by reading the words aloud even when alone, I would also be hearing His words and there was blessing which would come from taking His words to heart. By taking that action, it is like the circuit connection switch is turned on. God’s power is alive in His spoken word. As I speak His words, they enlighten me with His truths. I am empowered by His Holy Spirit flowing through the wave lengths of the spoken word to live out His words in my everyday life with joy and fulfillment.

When I worked as a special educator, I taught reading to young children. Sometimes, I had my students read aloud in a curved PVC pipe which went from their mouths to their ears. This was a research based strategy I had been taught to help reluctant readers improve their reading. Honestly, I don’t know exactly how this procedure helped them. Some how by hearing the words as they read them aloud and by reading passages over and over, their fluency improved and they developed a joy in reading aloud.

To do a little more research for this article, I asked Siri on my smart phone to search for the topic “Reading Aloud God’s Word”. Her immediate reply was, “It’s all a mystery to me.” I laughed to myself and thought how true. The light that comes from reading God’s word aloud, hearing it and taking it to heart is a mystery!

This quote from St. Therese of Lisieux may reveal some of the answer to the mystery:

“I know Christ dwells within me all the time, guiding me and inspiring me whenever I do or say anything. A light, of which I caught no glimmer before, comes to me at the very moment when it is needed.” [2]

In the coming days I challenge us all to not only read God’s words silently but spend time reading the Bible aloud, certainly if studying Revelation. I look forward to hearing about the truths God reveals to you by His Spirit.

There truly is a divine connection.

[1] Currently I am studying Revelation using the lessons prepared by Bible Study Fellowship International (See bsfinternational.org for more information.)

Does Our Power Washer Work?

by Brenda D. Flowers

As I was entering my house recently, I noticed spider webs had taken over the crevices and corners of many of the nearby windows. This question came to mind, “Does our power washer work?” I tried to recall the last time my husband and I had tried to use our power washer to clean the outside of our house. It had been a long time and the thought of the job brought dread. I recalled the last time we used it; I had turned the knob on too high a setting which caused our wooden deck to splinter in several places where I tried to clean.

Awakened this morning at 3:00 AM, I realized I had been dreaming about the dread of cleaning the outside of my house. I couldn’t recall details but I know I was balking about the process in my dream. Then I realized I was hearing another message. It’s also time to do some internal house cleaning.

As we mature in Christ, there are times we must allow Holy Spirit to have a good POWER cleansing. He is the best Power Washer, and yes, He works at just the right time, although we may not know it at first. Isn’t it true, the times He seems to do His best cleansing isn’t on calm cool partly sunny days, the kind of days we hope to have when cleaning our brick and mortar houses. No, to do His cleansing, He chooses intense, hot sunny days or more often than not dark stormy days, days when times are hardest.

As I compose this article, I realize there are still places in my heart needing a good cleansing. The hard hidden dirty places where some bitter roots are starting to grow. They need to be softened and the roots removed. By choosing to forgive instead of getting bitter, God’s love can fully fill me, enabling me to be more sensitive to his calling for me. The process of maturing is a gradual cleansing process. Yet, Holy Spirit is patient and gentle, unlike the power washer treatment I have used in the past on my house. I realize, He waits until we are ready. This verse comes to mind as I pen these words:

Search me, O God, and know my heart;

                                                 Try me, and know my anxieties;

And see if there is any wicked way in me,

And lead me in the way everlasting. Psalm 139:22-24 (NKJV)

That is my sincere prayer.

He Points the Way

He Points the Way

by Brenda D. Flowers

“Purpose provides power as I point the way.” What do these words mean? I asked the LORD as I reread the words I had penned in my journal.

There is no denying that God’s word is clear in declaring we each have been created for great purpose. . .  to glorify God.
Everyone who is called by My name,

Whom I have created for My glory; I have

formed him, yes, I have made him.” Isaiah 43:7 (NKJV)

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you

and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV).
During my journey as a Christian, there have been several junction points when I have asked God questions as to why He created me or what my purpose was for being alive. There have been dark lonely periods in my life when God has seemed distant or uncaring; often He has remained quiet as I have searched.

After years of seeking a closer walk with Jesus, I have matured in the revelation that at those dark times when I didn’t hear the Lord,   I had often been praying selfish prayers. I had not been seeking God’s will or purpose, but had been striving to get God’s approval for what I thought was my purpose.

In my early walk, I was striving to get God’s approval of the steps I was taking. I often thought I was walking according to His plan. Yet, in reality, I was not. Instead, I was walking in a way not much different from those who had not asked Jesus to be their Savior. Trying to fit into the ways of the world, I walked according to my flesh, my emotions and my own thoughts, often experiencing fear and little life or joy.
One weekday in July, a friend and I were hiking along a trail in a newly established forested park. The trails were not yet marked well and when we came to a point where there was a three way juncture, we were confused as to which way to go. One path quickly came to an ugly dead end. The wide, heavily trodden path seemed to be the best way. Yet, the steep rocky path actually led to the intended destination and along the way also led to a glorious overlook.
God loves us so much He gives us many warnings, saying not to be tempted to go our own way which may seem to be the easier way.

Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Matthew 7:13 (NKJV)

Lean not to your own way.  1 John 2:1 (NKJV)

When walking with my friend on the wooded path, I kept looking for the colored marks on wooden posts to make sure we were on the right trail. The more I read the Bible and search God’s truths I realize how simply and clearly God has marked the path to maturity, leading us to His purpose for our lives and to a perfect destination.
God has blazed the way to salvation and sanctification with red marks, the marks of Jesus’ blood. Jesus willingly died on the cross as the perfect sacrifice so all mankind could and can be restored to a right relationship with God the Father. Through, Jesus’ death and resurrection, we are justified to be a dwelling place of God’s Holy Spirit. As we die to our flesh and fully trust Christ as Savior and Lord, we are filled with His power to accomplish His will for our lives. Our journey is to become more and more like Jesus.

Good and upright is the LORD;

Therefore He instructs sinners in the way.

The humble He guides in justice,

And the humble He teaches His way. Psalm 25 8-9

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.

No one comes to the Father except through Me. John 14:6

Maturity in Christ through Spiritual Gifts

Maturity in Christ through Spiritual Gifts
by Judy Hitson

I Peter 4: 10 NIV Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace.

As a puzzle has pieces that fit perfectly together, so Christ fits us perfectly together as members of His body with gifts and calling. His word says they are irrevocable, Rom. 11: 29.

Regarding maturity in Christ, I wrote about believing in the Lord Jesus Christ, receiving His Spirit, the importance of prayer, nourishment from milk and meat of God’s word and having the mind of Christ. Now let’s consider our Spiritual gifts.

In Maturity of Christ through God’s word, I asked three questions,

What is God’s calling on your life?
How has He gifted you in the body of Christ?
Have you considered your calling and gifts from God?

You may have an understanding of the gifts and calling God has given you, in which case, I commend you. You may have studied Spiritual gifts in the Bible and be familiar with the list of seven motivational gifts in Romans 12: 6-8 and the list of nine power or manifestation of gifts in I Corinthians 12: 8-10. These are excellent Scripture passages to ponder, to understand for our lives and to help other Christians understand. Peter talks about speaking and serving gifts, I Peter 4: 11. This perspective brought fresh revelation to my heart. It was during a small group Bible Study I did at a friend’s house when we studied the letters of Peter. At that time, I thought I understood my gifts and calling from God, only to discover, I had much more to learn. May my personal testimony of this revelation be helpful in your life regarding your gifts and calling from God.

One day, my friend asked if I would lead the study when the regular leader was not able to come. The Lord spoke clearly to me in my prayer time, reminding me of things I learned in a previous study about His gifts and calling in my life. The words of Peter came alive as the Holy Spirit revealed I had a speaking gift in prophecy and my friend had a serving gift in exhortation. We fit together perfectly. Whether ministering two by two or in a group, the revelation and understanding of our Spiritual gifts and calling magnified our places in the body of Christ to serve others as faithful stewards of God’s grace. The Lord formerly revealed my calling as a mother as I read Judges 5: 7b NASB Until I, Deborah, arose, Until I arose, a mother in Israel.  These words about came off the page to me. Within moments, a woman called to ask if I could watch her son when she returned to work part time. It was confirmation of my calling from God as a mother like His confirmation of my Spiritual gifts through Peter and my friend asking if I’d substitute leading the Bible study.

Come now before the Lord.  Prayerfully consider His calling and gifts in your life. Ask if He has any adjustments for you to serve others as a faithful steward of His grace. God arranged the parts of the body of Christ and placed you exactly where you fit. It is the perfect place for you. He wants you to understand, I Cor. 12: 1, 12-27.

Prayer: Father bless me to mature in Christ through Spiritual gifts and Your calling in my life to fulfill my God given destiny. Help me eagerly desire the greater gifts, the more excellent way, the way of love,
I Cor. 12:31; I Cor. 13-14. In the name of Jesus Christ and by Your Spirit. Amen.

Maturity In Christ through the Mind of Christ

Maturity in Christ through the Mind of Christ
by Judy Hitson

*Romans 8: 6 NIV The mind governed by the flesh is death but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.

How is your mind governed?

The decision is ours, what we think and what we do in life each day. The importance is, the thoughts of our mind result in our actions. For as he thinks within himself, so he is,
Pr. 23: 7a NKJV.

What we feed our body, soul and spirit matters. Think about it.
If we eat junk food every day, what happens to our body?
If we supply our mind with junk, selfish desires, motives or actions, what happens to our soul, (mind, will and emotions)?
If we give our spirit, our innermost being, selfish, fleshly understanding,
will we not be motivated by self, the flesh, in our actions?

On the other hand, when we receive the Holy Spirit as a believer in Jesus Christ,
we experience the second birth, born of the Spirit, John 3.
The Spirit gives life, John 6: 63; 2 Corinthians 3: 6.
We have the mind of Christ, I Cor. 2: 16.

Our spirit and soul need spiritual food by the Spirit to be nourished and selfless like Jesus. He did nothing apart from the Father, for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner, John 5:19b NKJV. He calls us to follow Him, with His life living in and through us.

When we follow Jesus, He leads us to do nothing apart from Father, our minds will be governed by the Spirit. We will have life and peace. It is not easy! The life of Christ on earth was the way of the cross. We are called to follow in His steps, I Peter. 2: 21. The cross came before the crown in Jesus earthly life and so it will for us, as we follow Him, Luke 9: 23.

Let’s start our day in quiet and stillness before the Lord, with clean hands and a pure heart. Experience His presence.
Praise Him with thanksgiving.
Take time in prayer and Bible reading.
You will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You,
Is. 26: 3 NKJV.

The choice is ours to govern our mind by the flesh, resulting in death or to govern our mind by the Spirit, resulting in life and peace.

What is your choice?  Christ or self?

If Christ, He will help you think like He thinks, act like He acts, live by the Spirit, not self.
Enjoy life and peace rather than death. This is not talking about life ending on earth, but spiritual death, without the life of the Holy Spirit, Rom. 6: 11.

Prayer: Thank You Father in heaven for sending Jesus that we might walk by the Spirit and not carry out desires of the flesh. Thank You for free will to make choices. Help us as Your children on earth to live Christ. Holy Spirit govern our minds to experience life and peace with You and make right choices in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

*Cross Reference to Romans 8: 6, Galatians 6: 8 NKJV For the one who sows to his own flesh shall from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit shall from the Spirit reap eternal life.

Waves

Waves
by Cathy Weil

from July 25, 2015 Prophetic Journaling

Father, I love You! I don’t know what to say or do, II Chron. 20:12b NASB nor do we know what to do, but our eyes are on Thee. I just want You to know I love You. I know You are here.  I look to You.

I’m seeing a dark turbulent ocean with waves rolling and then crashing into the sand. The turbulence cannot stop itself. It takes certain conditions for the ocean to be smooth and silent like glass. The ocean reflects the sun and sky when everything is right.

How then, with our hearts? We take offense and the internal churning begins. Like a meat grinder, our hearts are ground and every square inch is wounded and raw. Waves of memories overtake our emotions until we are out of control and darkness prevails.  A form of insanity ensues with visions of what we could do or say that would make this pain stop or at least be bearable. That rip tide of thoughts and emotions has pulled you way under and out of safety’s reach. Unless you quickly stop this thrashing and look to the beach or the plumbline of your faith (the Word of God), and call out to the lifeguard (Jesus Christ) you will be pulled down into deep darkness. When you find yourself in this nightmare of a place, stop the insanity and call out to Jesus. Tell Him you are sorry you got so far out there. He will come get you. Jesus will give you peace and you can once again reflect on the SON.

And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.

Mark 4:39 (KJV).

Maturity in Christ through God’s Word

Maturity in Christ through God’s Word
by Judy Hitson

Amos 8: 11 NIV “The days are coming,” declares the Sovereign LORD, “when I will send a famine through the land– not a famine of food or a thirst for water but a famine of hearing the words of the LORD.

Are we living in these days? Is there a famine of hearing the words of the LORD?

The moral decline of our nation seems to be at an exponential rate. In my lifetime, I have seen the divorce rate increase and laws relax to obtain a divorce, heartbreak with broken and blended families. Throughout our land, laws passed to legalize abortion. Some states legalize same sex marriage. Now the Supreme Court decided this is the law of the land rather than leaving the decision to each state.

What does God’s word say about these things? Do we know or care as a nation? Has the enemy of deception invaded the moral fiber of our nation to deceive many?

Consider a famine of hearing the words of the LORD, does it cause you grief or apathy?

As a Christian, take a challenge with me to ponder this word from Amos and seek God’s face to know and do our part in such a famine. Take time to know God, His will, His ways and His word. I hear the call I read in Acts 6: 4 to devote myself to prayer, and to the ministry of the word, while others are called according to Acts 6: 2 to serve tables.

What is God’s calling on your life? How has He gifted you in the body of Christ?

Take time to consider Amos 8: 11-14. What are these days like in a famine of hearing the words of the LORD. See men staggering, wandering, searching but not finding the word of the LORD. Consider also, Acts 6: 1-7 when disciples increased and the word of God kept spreading.

I hear, “While there is yet time.” Here are verses that may apply to us while we have time:

John 9: 4 NASB “We must work the works of Him who sent Me, as long as it is day; night is coming when no man can work.

Rom. 13: 11 NIV And do this, understanding the present time. The hour has come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed.

2 Tim. 4: 2 NASB preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction. 3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine;………….

Post Note: See previous post on Christian Writers Circle blog from October 18, 2013 found in the category, Time. I wrote, Time in the Word with Amos 8: 11Consider taking time in God’s Word and maturing in Christ through God’s Word.

Prayer and Prophecy regarding Supreme Court Decision on Marriage

by Cathy Weil

Prayer:

Good morning gracious Father! You are Faithful and True! I’m so sorry that America has brought shame on itself yet again today. Have mercy, have mercy, have mercy on us, please.

Prophecy:

++The complacency the people have in their blatant disobedience is alarming. Their hearts are stirred by self- righteous lies they comfort themselves with. Oh, but if they could see the rotting spirit within them! All fall short of My Glory, but this is an attack on Me AND My people. Rise up, My people! Cast your swords together into one voice against this apostasy! The wicked are in one accord. You must pray in one accord. Oh the irony of your President singing “Amazing Grace” in My holy place. Did I, the Lord of lords, God, the only true God witness that??? How bold our enemies are with their victories! Praise and prayer must be constant at this time. You must take dominion over your allotted area and keep it holy by your praise, prayer and thanksgiving. I will fight for you and protect you. Check your walls for cracks and repair them with My ways. Abide fully in Me. Look, listen, praise, pray and thank Me. Focus on Me, there is no time for anything else. Do not fear, you were born for this time.

Xoxo, Jesus

Scriptures to consider:

Revelation 17: 14 NKJV “These will make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome them, for He is Lord of lords and King of kings; and those who are with Him are called, chosen, and faithful.”

John 17: 3 NKJV And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.

Maturity in Christ through Prayer

Maturity in Christ through Prayer by Judy Hitson

Psalm 25: 4-5 NIV Show me your ways, O LORD, teach me your paths; guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.

Show, Teach and Guide. These three action words gripped my heart as I was putting to memory Psalm 25: 3-4. I prayed, Lord show me Your ways, teach me Your paths, guide me in Your truth and teach me. From the depths of my being, I said, You are God my Savior and my hope is in You all day long. May praying this Scripture passage impact your heart by the Spirit of God as it did mine.

Take a moment. Like the psalmist, ask the LORD to show you, teach you and guide you by His Spirit in His ways, His paths and His truth. We need the LORD as much today as the day the psalmist penned this prayer.

Acknowledge the LORD as God your Savior and place your hope in Him all day long. He is there. Let hope arise. He will never leave you. Pray without ceasing, I Thess. 5: 17. Wait on Him moment by moment.

Commune with Him, desperate for Divine exchanges. Know His peace in exchange of anxieties or worries. Know His Spirit power, love and sound mind in exchange of any fears. Know how to walk in the Spirit and not lust after the flesh. For further meditation see the Amplified version of Phil. 4: 6-7; 2 Tim. 1: 7; Gal. 5: 16.

As He reveals His ways to you, walk in them, rather than your ways. He is worthy. Learn to follow Him more closely today than yesterday. He will teach you His paths for your life and guide you in truth as you requested.

As He shows you His ways, be blessed to show others His ways. As He teaches you His paths, learn to teach others His paths. As the LORD guides you in His truth, help others to learn the guidance of the Holy Spirit in His truth. Remember, He is the way, truth and life, John 14: 6. In the process of maturing in Christ, take part in discipleship.

Praying the word of God is a vital lesson. Is it a daily practice in your life?

It is worth the time to consider prayers through the Bible. Thy word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path, Ps. 119: 105 NASB. Discover His ways, His paths and His truth more today than yesterday maturing in Christ through prayer.

I Am Not My Own

I Am Not My Own

by

Kathleen Shore

To know we have been bought at the highest price… Marking us with His signet ring of unchangeable value and worth… His blood now painted upon the doorposts of our heart and upon the canvas of our lives displaying how high, how wide, how deep the Father’s love is for us. Brings me to the question, “Why would we choose to live outside the power of His love poured out?”

“What do you mean by this?” you might ask. In answer, I will tell you of my pursuit for God’s quest within me! I will let you in on my prayer for His loving kindness to roam through every dark cavity of my soul and to make the place He gave His Son to die for, His home in me.

This place within us is the reward of His suffering. But still, there are areas we withhold His reward when we deny Him full possession of His rightful place. This snare of the flesh continues to keep me on my knees, crying out in declaration, “I am not my own…”

In this journey, I soon became aware of Father’s heartbeat, searching to find His children living in awe and wonder of their First Love…filled with an unspeakable joy in response to what He had done.

This ignited a pure and holy fire, set ablaze in my heart…and I began to charge my life with these questions:

  • Is the life of our Lord Jesus Christ not enough?

Romans 5:1-5 NIV “Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.”

  • When did I decide that my thoughts were higher than His?

Isaiah 45:7-12 NIV “I am the Lord, and there is no other. I form the light and create darkness, I bring prosperity and create disaster; I, the Lord, do all these things. You heavens above, rain down my righteousness; let the clouds shower it down. Let the earth open wide, let salvation spring up, let righteousness flourish with it; I, the Lord, have created it. Woe to those who quarrel with their Maker, those who are nothing but potsherds among the potsherds on the ground. Does the clay say to the potter, ‘What are you making?’ Does your work say, ‘The potter has no hands?’ Woe to the one who says to a father, ‘What have you begotten?’ or to a mother, ‘What have you brought to birth?’ This is what the Lord says – the Holy One of Israel, and it’s Maker: Concerning things to come, do you question me about my children, or give me orders about the work of my hands? It is I who made the earth and created mankind on it. My own hands stretched out the heavens; I marshaled their starry hosts.”

  • Where did prideful arrogance seep in and cause me to resist The Almighty God or talk back to my Creator?

Isaiah 29:15-16 NIV “Woe to those who go to great depths to hide their plans from the Lord, who do their work in darkness and think, ‘Who sees us? Who will know?’ They turn things upside down, as if the potter were thought to be like the clay! Shall what is formed say to the one who formed it, ‘You did not make me?’ Can the pot say to the potter, ‘You know nothing?’

  • Who deceived me to think, “I can do this without Him”?

Galatians 5:7 NIV “You were running a good race. Who cut in on you and kept you from obeying the truth?”

  • What caused me to take my eyes off Him and sink into the waves of the enemy’s earthly rule over me?

Matthew 14:28-32 NIV “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “Why did you doubt?” And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down.

Drawn by His love to allow His finished work in me, I rested all that needed changed down at His feet. For the greatest misery of this life is not our earthly conditions…but the resistance of our will to the will of the Father within our earthly conditions.

Maturity in Christ Jesus marks the one who lives consumed with God’s will being done, through the power of His Son, no matter what the circumstances look like. They are not tossed about like a wave of the sea. They are not longing after something other than God’s will, accomplished.

We must live steadfast in knowing we are being transformed into His image through the earthly situations Father’s hand has placed us. He only asks that we yield ourselves to Him. He will work in us, to will and to do for His good pleasure. This all will come through His mighty power as we die to “self” so that we may live through Christ. Our part is to yield, His part is to work; and never will He give us a command, which is not accompanied by ample power to obey it.
